The date is now set for the next World Youth Day (WYD) to be held in the capital city of Portugal, Lisbon.
The Patriarch of Lisbon, Cardinal Manuel Clemente, announced that the WYD 2023 will take place on August 1-6, 2023, a year after the original date set in 2022 which was postponed by the Vatican due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
As preparation for the said global event, Pope Francis launched the 36th World Youth Day which will be quite different because it will be held in respective local churches, dioceses and eparchies around the globe, instead of being celebrated in a host city or country.
In his letter released on September 27, The Holy Father encouraged the faithful to take part of this year’s localized WYD, saying that he hopes that “all of us can experience these steps along the way as true pilgrims, and not merely as “religious tourists”.
WYD 2021 will be held during the Solemnity of Christ the King on November 21.
Portugal had registered one of the highest weekly Mass attendance records among young people in Europe according to a 2018 “European Young Adults and Religion” report, making it a suitable venue for a global Catholic youth event like the WYD. (Lem Leal Santiago/SOCOM-Binondo Church)
