The Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP-ECCCE) has intensified its appeal for Filipinos to support Caritas Manila’s Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP).

According to La Union Bishop Daniel Presto, vice-chairman of the commission, this initiative seeks to provide educational opportunities to more than 5,000 young people enrolled in the program. Bishop Presto emphasized that Caritas Manila’s YSLEP is an effective means for youth to escape the cycle of poverty through education.

Recently, Caritas Manila in coordination with Radio Veritas conducted the 2023 YSLEP telethon that raised 4.5 million pesos. These funds will be allocated to assist YSLEP scholars with their education.

With the assistance of YSLEP, there were approximately 1,600 college and technical-vocational students who graduated last year. This program has been instrumental in fostering hope and generating opportunities for a brighter future by opening doors to education for the less privileged youth across the nation.

Pascual told Radio Veritas.

Fr. Pascual also hopes that with the amount of money the telethon raises, Caritas Manila will have enough funds to support the Servant Leadership Training Programs that greatly shape the future of the scholars.

According to Susan Gomez, president of Caritas Manila Scholars Association (CAMASA), with any amount donated by the faithful, the young people will be allowed to turn their dreams into reality and become good and exemplary citizens of the country.

CAMASA represents YSLEP Graduates who assist YSLEP Scholars in securing employment in the private sector, allowing them to contribute to society after concluding their studies.

Ms. Gomez encouraged the scholars to participate in related programs such as KAMUSTAHAN, which may further explore themselves in wellness and personal welfare, including the CAMASA members, as a result of the pandemic’s aftermath.

“But despite the fact na mayroong ganon we created committees that will help, nagkaroon kami ng mga programs for mental health, we also held a program na KAMUSTAHAN and also noong medyo nakaluwag na ang panuntunan ng pandemic then we started all the programs that we left behind,” she said.

For the Academic Year 2022-2023, a total of 1,600 scholars graduated in the YSLEP program. The funds allocated for the scholarship program amounted to 111 million pesos per year for more than 5,000 scholars. (Hazel Boquiren/RCAM-AOC)

Fr. Pascual also called on the Filipino people to unite and support YSLEP so that more and more poor students will have the opportunity to finish college and eventually improve the lives of their families. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC | Photos from Caritas Manila Facebook page)

According to La Union Bishop Daniel Presto, vice-chairman of the commission, this initiative seeks to provide educational opportunities to more than 5,000 young people enrolled in the program.

Caritas Manila, the social service arm of the Archdiocese of Manila believes that education is one of the solutions to alleviate poverty in the country.

According to Fr. Anton CT Pascual, executive director of Caritas Manila, this is the main goal of the Caritas Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP) which supports four to five thousand college scholars every year.

“At Caritas Manila, we strongly believe in the effectiveness of education in alleviating and eradicating poverty,” said Fr. Pascual who is also the president of Radio Veritas.

Fr. Pascual shared that there were 800 to 1,000 students from colleges nationwide who graduated through YSLEP every year.

Last year, Caritas Manila’s scholarship program recorded the highest number of college graduates reaching 1,695.

“In a few years, you can actually see the effectiveness of the program and directly witness the improvement of a once impoverished family to a family with dignity and the means to lift themselves out of poverty,” according to Fr. Easter.

Fr. Pascual also called on the Filipino people to unite and support YSLEP so that more and more poor students will have the opportunity to finish college and eventually improve the lives of their families. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC | Photos from Caritas Manila Facebook page)
