Msgr. Gerardo Santos, our dear parish priest; Fr. Rolly Garcia our new chaplain; dear brother priests; dearly beloved in Christ,
How impressive the chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is! But more impressive is the presence of each one of you present here in the Eucharistic celebration.
The chapel has grown by leaps and bounds! I am told that it started with masses celebrated in an alley beside a furniture store at the second floor of the mall, then a chapel was built that is good for a little over 150 people. The small chapel was blest by my predecessor, Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales.
And then Rockwell so it fit to build this chapel that highlights the Crucified Christ, which by the way is the best depiction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with a passage from Scriptures — “AND THEY SHALL LOOK UPON HIM WHOM THEY HAVE PIERCED”. (John 19. 37)
The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on your left reminds us of the great apparition of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque of Paray les Monial where he opened the secrets of His heart. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has grown in the life of the Church, especially, the church in the Philippines with our first Friday devotion.
One can also pay attention to the image of the Virgen de la Rosa de Makati, the original image is in the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul here in Poblacion Makati, canonically crowned by Pope Francis in 2019.
The chapel is a genuine treasure! Thank you Rockwell Power Plant Mall. This chapel was blest by my immediate predecessor Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle who is now the prefect of the Congregation of the Evangelization of Peoples.
In the spirit of the gospel, allow me to share a few thoughts.
As I have pointed at the beauty of the chapel, I call your attention to the essence of the chapel. It was built and decorated for one single purpose — to call people to pray and to assemble the people of God in worship of the Eucharist.
The chapel is a holy place where God meets his people. It is a place of encounter. So important is the word encounter in the vocabulary of Pope Francis. Encounter is the I – THOU between God and every person. It is God who calls each one to prayer.
YES, prayer is a gift of God. For it is only by the Holy Spirit that we can pray.
Let us moreover go deeper into the significance of prayer. The parable of the Pharisee and the Publican describes two opposites – the sin of pride and the virtue of humility.
Pride is the deadliest of all sins. It was the cause of the downfall of our first parents ADAM and EVE. To think of oneself as the center of the universe is to marginalize God as the source and horizon of all.
The antidote is humility. It is to place oneself in a right relationship with God. St. Augustine said that the three most important virtues for a moral life are: Number 1 HUMILITY, Number 2 HUMILITY, Number 3 HUMILITY. He admitted he did not get very far understanding the BIBLE. Of his search for truth, he later wrote: “I sought with pride what only humility could make me find …. And I fell to the ground.”
Humility is the key to entering this Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. To genuflect and to kneel as you enter the chapel is a sign of humility to Jesus who is present in the tabernacle. And if you are unable to genuflect for one reason or other, it is recommended to bow before the tabernacle and the altar. For the altar is Christ!
Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus, I urge you to spend special time in silence before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in this chapel dedicated to his heart. And ask Jesus to keep you in a state of grace as you live this pilgrimage of life.
I have formally established the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a chaplaincy in the Archdiocese of Manila. I have appointed an able young priest in the person of Fr. Rolly Garcia as your chaplain. I thank Msgr. Gerry Santos for the years he has ministered to you and to the parish of Saints Peter and Paul. Msgr. Gerry is, after all, assigned in a “far away” parish (joke!). No, only at Saint Andrew the Apostle in Bel – Air.
At the beginning of my tenure as Archbishop of Manila, the Holy Father, Pope Francis started a journey known as “SYNODALITY”. Synodality is journeying together – we walk together, we listen together, we discern the will of God together and we work together for God and country.
And as we walk together, I ask you in humility to pray for me. Yes, please pray for me. (Photo File by RCAM-AOC)
