Red Wednesday

The annual Red Wednesday campaign is slated this November 23 not only to support Christians who are discriminated but also to  promote the Church where Christians experience suffering amidst their perseverance for their faith.

According to Veritas News, Msgr. Pedro Gerardo Santos, who leads the Aid to the Church in Need – Philippines as its Chief Operating Officer, states that red is a significant symbol of martyrdom for those who have risked their lives to their faith. Also, he recognizes the reality that a lot of Christians are persecuted in the modern day for simply what they believe in.

“The red is a very important symbol for us Christians, it symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit, symbolizes the power of love, it symbolizes the blood of martyrs,”  the priest said.

The theme for this year’s Red Wednesday campaign  is “Blessed are the Persecuted” which focuses on the persecution of Christians to be given adequate support in the midst of perseverance to their faith. It will be held this November 23 globally.

As the Catholic faithful experience attacks from their faith, the priest urged their fellow brothers and sisters to protect those who experience various forms of persecution.

Red Wednesday campaign was initiated by the Aid to the Church in Need – United Kingdom, a pontifical foundation, in 2016 with a mission “to honour all Christians who suffer and die for their faithfulness to Christ’s message of peace and love.”

Locally, in 2017, the Philippines started to participate in the Red Wednesday Campaign. Three years later, in 2020, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) approved the establishment of the Red Wednesday Campaign as Aid to the Church in Need in the Philippines expanded locally. “We consider Red Wednesday as the strongest reminder for this year’s celebration of 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines.”

This was the message of Fr. Reynaldo V. Romero, Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) Philippines Ecclesiastical Assistant, to mark the Red Wednesday celebration this year.

“All year, we have been jubilant about being gifted to give, and about our 500 years of blessings. Red Wednesday is our remembrance and our reminder that our 500 strong years of faith stand on the martyrdom and the sacrifice of our brothers and sisters who suffered persecution and oppression solely for believing in Christ,” Fr. Romero told the Archdiocese of Manila Office of Communications.

With the theme “Red Without Fear: The Church Journeying as One”, Red Wednesday campaign according to Fr. Romero does not only shows solidarity to all Christians all over the world who are persecuted because of their faith but also heeds the call of His Holiness Pope Francis to a synodal journey of the Church.

“The Red Wednesday celebration also coincides with our preparation towards the Synod. We often say that we are and we will be journeying as one,” Fr. Romero said.

“Red Wednesday, again, is our reminder: many of our brethren remain to have a hard time to journey along with us. We must pause, assess, and slow down. Above all, we must give a helping hand,” he added.

In the Archdiocese of Manila, Fr. Reginald Malicdem, Chancellor, issued a circular letter addressed to all clergy and religious men and women in the Archdiocese of Manila encouraged that the façade of all churches, schools and participating institutions to be illuminated or decorated in red.

The Red Wednesday campaign is an initiative of the Aid to Church in Need that creates awareness among Filipino Christians about the severity of Christian persecution and invites everyone “to make a visible statement by wearing red and, if resources allow, light their parishes or respective buildings or local monuments in red.

Red Wednesday

It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.

It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.
