“Pagbutihan ninyo ang pag-aaral ninyo.”

This was the message of Radio Veritas Vice President Fr. Roy M. Bellen during the outreach program of Radio Veritas to the Aeta Magindi Community in Barangay Camias Porac, Pampanga on September 26, 2023.

“Ang hihilingin lang namin sa inyo, pagbutihan ninyo ang pag-aaral ninyo. Alam ko hindi madali ang buhay dito sa Camias, pero ito po ay ginawa ng maraming pag-aaral at research, isa pong paraan, ang pinaka-sure na paraan daw po kahit paano para tayo makalagpas sa kahirapan ay pag-aaral,” Fr. Bellen said.

Fr. Bellen who spearheaded the event also stressed to the students the importance of education and how it will help alleviate poverty.

“Ito po ay maraming beses na pong ginawa, malaki pong epekto kapag ang tao po ay nakapag-aral. Kaya po ano man ang aming maitutulong sa inyo para makapag-aral kayo, para makapagtapos po kayo gagawin po ninyo,” he said.

“And siyempre bukod sa inyong sipag, sa inyong pagsunod sa mga teachers ninyo, kailangan siyempre ng blessings ni God,” he added.

Radio Veritas, with Caritas Manila and other groups who supported the outreach program, was able to distribute 200 family food packs, emergency kits, and 195 arm chairs to the grades 9 and 10 students of Camias High School.

Ms. Febie Ramirez, a teacher at Camias High School who has been serving the school for seven years, told Radio Veritas that all of them are thankful for the donation they received for it will help their students to be comfortable while studying inside the classroom. The students used to attend classes while sitting on the floor.

Ms. Ramirez further added that they seldom receive immediate or frequent assistance because of the remoteness of their area. Students who study there walk miles away from their home to the school.

The Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP-ECCCE) has intensified its appeal for Filipinos to support Caritas Manila’s Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP).

According to La Union Bishop Daniel Presto, vice-chairman of the commission, this initiative seeks to provide educational opportunities to more than 5,000 young people enrolled in the program. Bishop Presto emphasized that Caritas Manila’s YSLEP is an effective means for youth to escape the cycle of poverty through education.

Recently, Caritas Manila in coordination with Radio Veritas conducted the 2023 YSLEP telethon that raised 4.5 million pesos. These funds will be allocated to assist YSLEP scholars with their education.

With the assistance of YSLEP, there were approximately 1,600 college and technical-vocational students who graduated last year. This program has been instrumental in fostering hope and generating opportunities for a brighter future by opening doors to education for the less privileged youth across the nation.

Caritas Manila, the lead social service and development ministry of the Catholic Church in the Philippines, extends its assistance to the Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP) as they seek equal opportunity employment with the help of private sectors.

According to Veritas News, Susan Gomez, who is the current president of the Caritas Manila Scholars Association, stated that scholars mostly from provinces are encouraged to pursue employment where the graduates may experience convenience especially, for their job security.

“I think ang ating average namin dito sa Metro Manila na scholars na nagkakaroon ng trabaho is about 90%, 80 to 90%, ang problema lang po natin ay sa probinsya, yun po ang tinutututukan namin na sana ay magkaroon ng employment opportunities in the provinces para hindi na po pupunta dito sa Metro Manila yung ating graduates,” she said.

Ms. Gomez encouraged the scholars to participate in related programs such as KAMUSTAHAN, which may further explore themselves in wellness and personal welfare, including the CAMASA members, as a result of the pandemic’s aftermath.

“But despite the fact na mayroong ganon we created committees that will help, nagkaroon kami ng mga programs for mental health, we also held a program na KAMUSTAHAN and also noong medyo nakaluwag na ang panuntunan ng pandemic then we started all the programs that we left behind,” she said.

For the Academic Year 2022-2023, a total of 1,600 scholars graduated in the YSLEP program. The funds allocated for the scholarship program amounted to 111 million pesos per year for more than 5,000 scholars. (Hazel Boquiren/RCAM-AOC)
