His Eminence Jose F. Cardinal Advincula, Archbishop-elect of the Archdiocese of Manila will receive his ‘red hat’ (biretta) on June 18, 2021, at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Roxas City, at 3 p.m.

“Sana matuloy na ang bestowal ng insignia; increasing pa rin kasi ang number ng new COVID-19 cases sa Capiz,” Cardinal Advincula told Radio Veritas.

The red hat that a cardinal wears symbolizes his office or rank. It also symbolizes his willingness to spill his blood for the church.

The bestowal of the ‘red hat’ of the outgoing Archbishop of Capiz was first scheduled last May 28 but was postponed because Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Charles Brown underwent a 14-day mandatory quarantine after he arrived in the country from the United States of America.

It was again set on June 8 but was again postponed because of the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Capiz.

Cardinal Advincula was appointed by His Holiness Pope Francis as the 33rd Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Manila last March 25, 2021.

He will be formally installed at the Manila Cathedral on June 24, 2021, the solemnity of the birth of St. John the Baptist and the 450th anniversary of the founding of the City of Manila and of the first parish in Manila that will later become the Manila Cathedral. The Archdiocese of Manila will hold a 9-day spiritual preparation before the formal installation of Jose F. Cardinal Advincula, the 33rd Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Manila.

The novena will start on June 15 and will end on 23, 2021.

According to Bishop Broderick S. Pabillo, Apostolic Administrator of Manila in his Pastoral Instruction “Your servant is listening” released last June 9, 2021, the novena should bear these three elements: prayer, catechesis and charity.

Short catechetical video presentations on the mystery of the Church, the role of the bishop and realities of the Archdiocese of Manila will be shown before the Mass to be prepared by the Commission on Catechesis and Education of the Archdiocese of Manila.

The faithful, according to the bishop are also encouraged to do acts of charity by listening and responding to the cries of the poor. Parishes are asked to “organize activities that would promote charity and generosity, like feeding programs, distribution of food bags or gift checks”.

“Caritas Manila will distribute gift certificates for 50,000 families (worth PhP 50 M) to the parishes. Let this be a gift of Cardinal Advincula to our needy brethren in the Archdiocese,” Bishop Pabillo said.

Cardinal Advincula will be formally installed as the 33rd Archbishop of Manila at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception or Manila Cathedral on June 24, 2021, the Solemnity of the birth of St. John the Baptist, at 9 in the morning.
