500 Years of Christianity

In preparation for the 500 years anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines and the commemoration of the first baptism in the country, the Archdiocese of Manila dedicated the five Sundays of Lent to highlight the importance of Baptism.
According to Veritas News, Most Rev. Broderick S. Pabillo, D.D., Apostolic Administrator of Manila, pointed out that the Baptismal Catechism is a crucial element of the historical celebration.
“Tuwing linggo ng Kuwaresma, isang element ng binyag ang ating binibigyang halaga. Tulad last Sunday, binigyang halaga natin ang ‘baptismal promises o baptismal commitment’. Ngayong linggo ang bibigyan natin ng halaga yung ‘puting damit’ na isusuot sa atin, Transfiguration of the Lord. So, kada linggo may isang element na nagbibigay ng halaga sa binyag,” said Bishop Pabillo during an interview with Radio Veritas.
He emphasized that baptism is not only for the removal of original sin but also a way to become children of God.
“Pero ang mas mahalaga tayo ay naging anak ng tayo ng Diyos at tayo ay naging bahagi ng simbahan kaya tayo ay nagtutulungan kasi tayo ay mga binyagan,” said the Bishop.
On April 14, the Catholic Church will be celebrating the memorial of the first baptism in the Philippines. In line with this, 500 babies will be baptized in some parishes including those in the Archdiocese of Cebu.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) earlier announced that the celebration of the 500 Years of Christianity will be extended until the year 2022 due to the pandemic.
CBCP has also encouraged dioceses and parishes to have their local celebrations. (Fatima Llanza/RCAM-AOC)
