Pope gives “Golden Rose” to Antipolo Churchfor elevation as int’l shrine

A month after its official declaration as Southeast Asia’s first international shrine, the Antipolo Cathedral—now the International Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage—received a very special gift from His Holiness, Pope Francis for the patroness and for her pilgrims.

The “Golden Rose” or “Rosa d’Oro” was offered at the feet of Our Lady of Antipolo by theMost Rev. Salvatore Fisichella, the Pro-Prefect for the Section of New Evangelization of the Dicastery for Evangelization, in his thanksgiving Eucharistic celebration at the new international shrine on February 26.

In a press release posted by the Cathedral’s Facebook page, the Golden Rose is “considered the highest honor given personally by the Supreme Pontiff to a Marian image and shrine across the world, as it is a commissioned gift from the Pope himself.”

It also stated that this is the first time in the Philippines and in Asia that a Golden Rose has been given to a Marian shrine, following the Golden Rose at the tomb of St. Francis Xavier at the Se Cathedral given by Pope Pius XII and the Golden Rose at the Church of the Nativity given by Pope Paul VI.

In his homily, Archbishop Fisichella emphasized that Antipolo’s elevation as an international shrine is a “mission that must be shared” and a “sign of grace that calls all of us to a deep witness of faith.”

“This international shrine… therefore open to the mission of having no boundaries, but instead, opening wide its doors to welcome all, especially the poor and those in need of consolation and peace,” the pro-prefect stressed as reported by the CBCP News in its article of February 28.

The famous spiritual home of Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje has been elevated as an international shrine through a decree issued by the Holy See on March 25, 2023, 397 years after the image departed Acapulco, Mexico on board a gallon and sailed for three months, reaching the Philippine shores on June 18, 1626.

Earlier this year, on January 26, the new title has been officially proclaimed through a symbolic coronation and a solemn declaration rite presided by the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Charles John Brown and attended by over 80 bishops across the country.
