Pope Francis appoints Cardinal Tagle to another Vatican post

His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples as a new member of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See.

APSA, which is in Italian Amministrazione del Patrimonio della Sede Apostolica, is the office of the Roman Curia that deals with the “provisions owned by the Holy See to provide the funds necessary for the Roman Curia to function”. It acts as the Treasury and central bank of Vatican City and the Holy See.

The appointment was made on Monday, Feb. 22, 2021, at noon, Rome time, and 7 pm, Manila time.

Along with Cardinal Tagle, Pope Francis also appointed Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development as a new member of APSA.

On December 8, 2019, Pope Francis named Cardinal Tagle as the Vatican’s Prefect for the Evangelization of Peoples, making him the second Asian to head the congregation.

Pope Francis promoted the former Archbishop of Manila to the highest rank of Cardinal, Cardinal-Bishop on May 1, 2020. He is the first Filipino to be included in that rank of the College of Cardinal.

Last year, upon his arrival in Manila to have a short visit to his family in Imus, Cavite, he tested positive for COVID-19 making him the first head of a Vatican dicastery and the fifth Filipino Bishop who acquired the virus. He was asymptomatic and had undergone quarantine that ended on September 14, 2020. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC)
