Faithful called to strengthen prayer life

Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula  highlighted the importance of prayer, particularly in the Year of Prayer that has been declared by Pope Francis.

In his homily for the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on March 28, 2024, he emphasized that prayer is essential for deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ and in strengthening our faith.

“In prayer, we show our faith and trust in God,” Cardinal Advincula said. “We admit that we cannot do everything on our own, that we need God’s help. And in prayer, God always responds to show us his great love, mercy, and care for us. In prayer, we are assured that there is a God, who is always listening and loving us.”

Cardinal Advincula also encouraged the faithful to participate in Holy Week liturgies and activities as he reflected on the significance of the Paschal Triduum, which is the three-day period that commemorates the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

He explained that the Paschal Triduum is the “heart of our faith” and that Catholics should make an effort to participate in the liturgies that are celebrated during this time.

Cardinal Advincula concluded his homily by urging Catholics to make prayer a part of their daily lives and to participate in the Holy Week liturgies.

“Let us not forget the importance of prayer in our lives,” he said. “Let us continue to value going to Mass every Sunday as a family. Let us teach and show our children, and the youth the value of Mass as our prayer. Let us make going to Mass and praying a part of our lives.”

Also during the Mass, the Cardinal washed the feet of twelve representatives from various sectors who play a significant role in the formation of Catholic faith. The people whose feet were washed by the Cardinal were Mrs. Dina Santos (elderly), Mrs. Regina Bautista (parent), Ms. Lilia Quintana (Catechist), Rev. Fr. Jesus Madrid, Jr. (Diocesan priest), Fray Shernan Sarmen (Religious brother), Sr. Liliam T. Viana  (Nun), Mr. Ted Toledo (Church Volunteer), Mrs. Candy Pangilinan (Social Media Influencer), Dr. Didoy Lobaton (Renewal Movement Leader), Bro. Bo Sanchez (Author of prayer and spirituality books), Dr. Rafael Lopez (Artist), and Mr. Nathan Dublin  (Songwriter/composer).

The Washing of the Feet is a part of the Liturgy of the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, which includes the re-enactment of the event when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. This significant tradition of the Catholic Church reminds the faithful that as disciples of Christ, we are also called to serve with a humble and contrite heart. (By Luis Angelo Sta.
