Caritas Manila celebrates 69 Years of Charity Works

Caritas Manila, the social service arm of the Archdiocese of Manila celebrates its 69th year of doing charity works for the poor and for victims of disasters and calamities.

An online celebration was held at the headquarters of Caritas Manila in Pandacan, Manila where Manila Archbishop Jose F. Cardinal Advincula presided over the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on October 1, Feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus.

In his homily, the Cardinal recognized the tireless efforts of all the people behind the institution who truly dedicated themselves to being of service to those people who are in need.

“Sa pagdiriwang natin ng 69th Foundation Anniversary ng Caritas Manila, nais kong ipaabot, sa ngalan ng lahat ng mga pari, mga lider layko, mga scholars, maga beneficiaries at mga poor families, ang taus puso naming pasasalamat sa lahat ng mga manggagawa, volunteers at collaborators ng Caritas Manila,” said Cardinal Advincula.

He also commended Caritas Manila for becoming a channel of God’s grace, especially during the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic where a lot of people became hopeless.

“Sa panahong ang physical distancing ay naging emotional distancing na rin, nagtaya kayo ng inyong mga sarili. Kahit tumataas ang kaso ng COVID, matapang at mapagmalasakit kayong naghatid ng tulong sa mga poor communities, sa mga nawalan ng kita araw araw, sa mga pamilyang nagugutom. Dahil sa inyo, buhay na buhay si Hesus sa mga pamayanan ng arkidiyosesis at sa lahat ng dinadaluyuan ng biyaya dahil sa inyo,” said Cardinal Advincula.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Caritas Manila including all other institutions, parishes in the archdiocese, groups and individuals have been on the frontline assisting and responding to the daily needs of the people by providing food, clothes, quarantine facilities and medical needs. They have also distributed over a million gift packs and gift certificates from various donors and benefactors.

Fr. Anton CT Pascual, Executive Director of Caritas Manila said that the institution will continue to be true to its mission of helping the poor people in society to have good health and a better future.

“Sa 69 years natin na kung saan tayo’y nakikiisa sa synodality ni Pope Francis, naglalakbay tayo sa Panginoon kasama ang mga mahihirap at tinutulungan natin sila na matulungan ang kanilang sarili sa pamamagitan ng ating education, health program, livelihood, at itong pagiging kasapi ng Christian, caring and sharing community – Church of the poor,” Fr. Pascual told Radio Veritas.
