Cardinal Advincula: Without trust, our roadmap is useless.

Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula reminded the faithful of the presence of God in his homily during the Manila Archdiocesan General Pastoral Assembly (MAGPAS) at Saint Pedro Poveda College on April 6, 2024.

The Cardinal reflected on the Gospel and the lack of faith of the apostles of Jesus as they found it hard to believe that Jesus resurrected, saying that: “Jesus rebuked them because of their lack of faith.  And rightly so. Dapat lang silang pagsabihan dahil sa kakulangan ng kanilang pananalig at dahil sa katigasan ng kanilang ulo.“

However, Jesus unexpectedly trusted the apostles to be the ones to proclaim the Gospel.

Cardinal Advincula emphasized that this action is the proof of Jesus’ trust in the apostles and all the faithful.

He added, “For Jesus, trust is never earned.  Trust is freely given.  And Jesus trusts us because He loves us, for how could He love us without trusting us.“

“Being given this trust, the faithful should really strive to prove worthy of this as one does its best to not lose that trust.”

“Sa ating unang pagbasa ngayon, narinig natin kung paanong buong tapang na hinarap nina Pedro at Juan ang mga pinuno ng bayan.  They could even say to their face, we rather obey God than men for it is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard. They were able to do this because Jesus trusted them.”

Cardinal Advincula further reflected on how not having trust in others makes it hard to work together.

He said, “Magiging mahina ang ating ugnayan kung walang tiwala sa kapwa.  Hindi tayo susulong at hindi natin mararating ang ating pananaw kung kulang sa tiwala.  We can only move forward in our journey if we trust our companions in the journey.  We can only realize our goals and vision, if we trust each other.  Without trust, our roadmap is useless.  Without trust, we will never be a synodal Church. “

Among those present were Rev. Fr. Jason Laguerta, Episcopal Vicar of the Implementation of the Traslacion Roadmap; priests; and the lay leaders from the different parishes and communities in the Archdiocese of Manila.
