Bishop Sorra of Legazpi dies at 91

Bishop Jose Sorra, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Legaspi, died on Thursday, January 21, 2021. He was 91.

Bishop Jose Baylon, current Bishop of Legazpi told CBCP News that Bishop Sorra died around midnight “due to respiratory failure secondary to pulmonary embolism.”

“We ask for your prayers for his eternal rest,” Bishop Baylon said.

Bishop Sorra, the Philippines’ oldest Bishop was ordained priest in 1956 and was appointed first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Virac in 1974.

He was named the fourth bishop of Legazpi in 1993, and served until his retirement in 2005.

Bishop Sorra established the youth apostolate in the Philippines when he was the bishop of Virac.

He also served as the first chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Youth after its creation in 1986. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC)
