Bishop Pacana dies at 91

Former bishop of the Diocese of Malaybalay dies at the age of 91.

The diocese released a statement that Bishop Honesto “Onie” Pacana died on Thursday, February 1 at 12:33 p.m. at Maria Reyna Xavier University Hospital in Cagayan De Oro City, where he was admitted for a few days.

The statement reads, “Please join us in offering prayers for the eternal repose of the soul of Bishop Onie and for the whole Diocese of Malaybalay as we mourn, and find strength in our shared faith,”.

Ordained as a Jesuit priest on June 10, 1965, he was appointed as bishop of Malaybalay on January 12, 1994. He was then consecrated to the episcopate on March 4, 1994.

He served as the first chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Culture, which was established in 1994, in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

Bishop Pacana retired on February 2010 after serving the diocese for nearly 16 years.

The diocese has noted during his tenure that, “He touched countless lives and inspired many with his wisdom, compassion, and devotion.”

The statement also encouraged the faithful to remember and celebrate the profound impact of the bishop to the community.

Details for the memorial services and interment schedules will be announced by the diocese soon.

Yesterday, the Diocese of Tandag also announced the death of Bishop Emeritus Nereo Odchimar, who passed away at age of 83. (Louise Nazir Banzuela/SOCOM-San Felipe Neri Parish | Photo from CBCP News)
