Bishop Pabillo calls for Action to Address Climate Change Effects

Taytay, Palawan Bishop Broderick Pabillo appealed for further intensification of the initiatives to take care of the environment to lessen the effects of climate change in the economy and the marginalized.

Bishop Pabillo emphasized on how the disasters and calamities caused by climate change directly affects the poor.

The bishop also stated that these disasters ruin businesses and establishments, affecting the country’s economy.

In his statement to Radio Veritas, he said, “Kapag nasisira ang kalikasan, dumadating po ang malalakas na bagyo at maraming pagkasira, kaya ang hanapbuhay ng mga tao ay nasisira, kaya kung mahabang pagninilayan natin ang pangangalaga sa kalikasan, dapat isaisip natin na ang kalikasan ay nakatutulong din sa ekonomiya.”

“When nature is destroyed, strong typhoons bring about great damage, people’s livelihoods are ruined and upon reflecting earnestly on the preservation of nature, we should remember that nature helps the economy.”

Bishop Pabillo cited the recent events of the El Niño affecting the farmers and the floods in Saudi Arabia as examples of such.

Caritas Philippines, Diocese of Caloocan, and Eco-Convergence are among those who are working together to assist the fishermen affected by the Manila Reclamation Projects.

The Church is continuously working on programs, together with environment groups, in order to address the crisis. (By: Louise Nazir A. Banzuela/SOCOm-San felipe Neri parish | Photo from Bishop Broderick Pabillo’s Facebook Page)
