Archdiocese of Manila warns faithful against fake Facebook account of Cardinal Advincula

The Archdiocese of Manila through its Office of Communications warned the general public about the fake Facebook account bearing the name of Manila Archbishop Jose F. Cardinal Advincula.

According to the Facebook post, Rev. Fr. Roy Bellen, communications director, the fake page has been used for various personal interests. Also, he confirmed it is neither way connected to the Archdiocese nor to the Archbishop.

“The Archdiocese of Manila Office of Communications would like to inform the public that the FB Account with the name Jose F. Cardinal Advicula is not an official acccount nor in anyway connected to the Archbishop of Manila. Please help us report this account that misrepresent the Cardinal and is sadly only being used to sell products for profit,” he said.

Fr. Bellen advised the general public to be vigilant on the fake pages circulating online that may lead to misrepresentation and ‘false information’ especially to Church figures.

“We encourage everyone to be very careful in liking, sharing and following dubious accounts that misrepresent church leaders and organizations so as not to aid in the proliferation of false information,” he added.

As of this writing, the fake page has already been taken down.

Recently, there was a fake Facebook account using the page of the Manila Cathedral with a post using former Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle endorsing a product and enticing the public to buy it.

In this digital age where social media opens doors for connectivity and other activities, the creation of fake accounts and email scams are used for deceiving the public for financial gains. The rise of these fake Facebook accounts and scam email underscores the importance of digital literacy and vigilance. (Hazel Boquiren and Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC)
