Archdiocese of Manila celebrates Clergy day

After two years of the pandemic, the clergy and religious of the Archdiocese of Manila gathered together to celebrate Clergy day and participate in a sports fest to celebrate the gift of priesthood on Monday, August 1.

“Itong ginagawa nating event na ito ay primarily upang ipagdiwang ang biyaya ng pagkapari. Sa pamamagitan ng pagdiriwang ng banal na misa, nagkakasama sama kami… nagkakaisa sa panalangin lalo yung tinatawag na fellowship,” Fr. Tony Navarette, head of the organizing committee told the Archdiocese of Manila Office of Communciations.

Rev. Msgr. Jose Clemente F. Ignacio, Moderator Curiae and Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Manila presided over the celebration of the Holy Eucharist to open the event at the St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Paco, Manila, at 10 in the morning.

Archbishop-Emeritus of Manila Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales was also in attendance during the Mass and he was greeted by the clergy as he celebrates his 90th birthday on August 10, 2022.

The priests and religious took part in various games namely bowling, badminton, tennis and archery at the Philippine Columbian Association of the Philippines in Paco, Manila.

According to Fr. Navarette, the Clergy Day or Araw ng mga Pari is held every 4th of August, Feast of Saint John Mary Vianney, the patron saint of all priests. The event, he added, is aimed to develop camaraderie among fellow priests as well as to improve their health, especially today as the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to infect the people.

Fr. Navarette also shared that although Manila Archbishop Jose F. Cardinal Advincula was not able to attend the event because of prior commitment, he would be very glad to see his priests gather together in harmony.

“Ang cardinal naman po natin na-miss niya ito pero of course he would be very happy kung nandito siya and in fact, kahit wala siya dito, he really pushed for the event. Kasi kapag nagkakasundo sundo ang mga pari kahit through this event man lang, masaya ang mga pari so, menos ang mga problema ng archbishop kaya masaya ang archbishop,” said Fr. Navarette.

Fr. Navarette also thanked the laity who continue to support their priest especially in the parishes.

“Sa mga fathers happy feast day po at sa mga layko, thank you sa mga suporta niyo sa aming mga pari. At itong aming pagsisikap na maging healthy, magkakasundo, masaya, kayo po yung number one beneficiary nito. Kasi kung yung pari ninyo ay hindi aborido, happy lang ang parish,” he said.

Fr. Ryan Jamemar A. Belono-AC is a new priest in the Archdiocese of Manila. He was ordained on December 3, 2021, and has been already assigned to 3 different parishes. As a young priest, he aspires in the future to be involved in various ministries in the archdiocese. He as well hopes for more gatherings and activities that will allow him to get to know better his brother priests.

“Siguro sa akin ang something na I will look forward to ay yung makapgserve sa RCAM, maibigay ko yung buong sarili ko,” he said.

“Mas makilala ko pa yung ibang mga kapatid na pari na siguro in the future ay makakatrabaho ko din sila dito sa RCAM,” he added.

Clergy Day is an annual sports festival that started in 1995 during the auspice of the late Jaime L. Cardinal Sin, Archbishop Emeritus of Manila. It is aimed at promoting unity, friendship, and sportsmanship as well as developing camaraderie among priests. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC | Photo by Maricar Santos/RCAM-AOC | Photogallery)
