8th Conference on New Evangelization focuses on transforming parishes

“Transforming the parishes.”

This was the center of discussions at the 8th annual Philippine Conference on New Evangelization (PCNE) which aims to address the problems that local churches are facing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Fr. Jason Laguerta, director of the Office for the Promotion of New Evangelization (OPNE), which is in charge of organizing the conference, said that this year’s conference seeks to tackle ways to assist the parishes weakened by the current difficult situations in the country caused by the pandemic and other factors.

Fr. Laguerta pointed out that PCNE 8 is part of the Church’s continuing synodal consultations to deepen the clergy’s understanding about the synodal church.

“The objective is how to transform parishes so that we will respond to the challenges of the times, basically renewal of parishes at paano lumakas ulit ang simbahan,” he said.

“Ito actually ay follow up ng synodal consultations at ito ay naka-focus sa mga pari muna para lang magkaroon ng pagkakataon ang mga pari na palalimin ang pagninilay sa synodal church at ang ibig sabihin nito which is missionary,” he added.

In collaboration with Canada-based Divine Renovation Ministry, the group of Fr. Laguerta helped provide a “very good model of how to re-ignite parishes or transform parishes from being maintenance parishes to missionary parishes.”

The two-day conference was held on August 3-4 at San Carlos Seminary, Makati and attended by around 500 participants including bishops, priests and religious men and women from all over the country, and was hosted by Anna Stuart, Global Operations Director of Divine Renovation Ministry.
