800 homeless receive gifts on World Day of the Poor

The Archdiocesan celebration of the 7th World Day of the Poor was held at the San Vicente de Paul Parish ground last November 18, 2023, with the theme, “Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor” (Tob 4:7).

More than 800 families in Manila participated in the half-day event and enjoyed free haircuts, baths, healthy meals, medical assistance various activities for both children and adults.

The activity was highlighted by the celebration of the Holy Mass presided over by Fr. Enrico Adoviso, commissioner of the Archdiocesan Commission on Social Service and Development. He was joined by Caritas Manila Executive Director, Fr. Anton CT Pascual and Fr. Joel Rescober, rector and parish priest of San Vicente de Paul Parish.

After the Mass, Caritas Manila, the social service arm of the archdiocese distributed gift packs to all the families who participated in the celebration.

The 7th WDP according to Fr. Adoviso calls on the faithful to reflect on the words of the Holy Father Pope Francis to build a culture of encounter by providing and extending help to the less fortunate people in the society.

Adoviso told the Archdiocesan Office of Communications.

On its continued service to the poor, the Archdiocesan Commission on Social Services and Development is in its seventh year of organizing the archdiocesan celebration of the World Day of the Poor.

In the Vatican, Pope Francis led the Eucharistic Celebration at St. Peter’s Basilica on November 19, at 10 in the morning.

Celebrated every 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, the World Day of the Poor was established by Pope Francis as he promulgated his Apostolic Letter, Misericordia et Misera on November 20, 2016, to celebrate the Extraordinary Year of Mercy.
