10th World Meeting of Families to be held in Rome from June 22-26

The 10th World Meeting of Families is being held in Rome today, Wednesday, June 22, 2022, until Saturday, June 26, 2022. The celebration was postponed by a year because of the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At past meetings, most families stayed at home. The meeting was perceived as being something remote, at most followed on television, and unknown to the majority of families,” Pope Francis said in his video message.

The celebration which is expected to draw more than 2,000 Catholic families focuses on the theme, “Family Love: A Vocation and a Path to Holiness” and marks the end of the Amoris Laetitia Family Year, Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation on love in the family.

Pope Francis also said the event will have a “special format”.

“It will be an opportunity provided by Providence to create a worldwide event that can involve all the families that would like to feel part of the ecclesial community,” he said.

According to the Holy Father, “Rome will be the main venue, and there will be a number of delegates of family pastoral care participating in the Festival of Families, the Pastoral Congress and the Holy Mass. These will be broadcast all over the world”.

“During that same period, each diocese can be the focal point for a local meeting for its families and communities. In this way, everyone will be able to participate, even those who cannot come to Rome,” he said.

The first World Meeting of Families took place in Rome in 1994 and usually takes place every three years in a different country. The last celebration took place in Dublin, Ireland, in 2018.

On June 25, 2022 (Saturday evening), Pope Francis will celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s Square and on Sunday, June 26, 2022, he will address families at the Angelus.

The WMOF is organized by the Diocese of Rome and the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to devote ourselves with enthusiasm to family ministry with spouses, families and pastors together,” said Pope Francis.

“Take courage, then, dear pastors and dear families, and help each other to organize meetings in the dioceses and parishes on every continent,” he added.

The Commission on Family and Life of the Archdiocese of Manila will celebrate the XWMOF in the online catechism and the Holy Eucharist to be aired on Radio Veritas at 12 in the afternoon starting June 22 until June 26, 2022. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC)
