Laity prays, fasts for priests at recollection on August 22

The Archdiocese of Manila has organized a “Day of Recollection, Prayer and Fasting” offered by the lay people for the sanctification of priests and for vocations to the priesthood as a way of celebrating the Year of Priests as declared by the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI.

The recollection will be held on August 22, 2009, a Saturday, the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary starting at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of the Eucharistic Lord, 5th floor, The Atrium, SM Megamall.



Ambassador to the Philippines of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta Leonida L. Vera will open the recollection at 10 a.m. This will be followed by the procession and enthronement of the image of St. John Mary Vianney, the Cure of Ars and patron saint of diocesan priests. Fr. Jaime Marquez, parish priest of St. John Mary Vianney parish in Makati will lead in the Opening Prayer.


The first talk will be given by Fr. Jason Laguerta, vocations director of the Archdiocese of Manila. A video presentation on the Priesthood will follow his talk. Msgr. Sabino Vengco who is active in the apostolate for retired priests will give a talk on the Preisthood. At 12 noon a lay couple will give their reflections on “Remembering Christ’s Incarnation.” After the Angelus, there will be an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament/Meditative Rosary, after which Fr. Genaro Diwa, head of the Ministry for Liturgical Affairs will give a reflection.


Ka Loring, a lay volunteer catechist and Papal Awardee will share her thoughts and experiences on her church work at around 130 pm. This will be followed by a sharing of the parents of a priest, Fr. Reginald Malicdem, the personal secretary of the Archbishop of Manila.


The final talk will be given by Ambassador Henrietta T. de Villa, head of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV). The lay people will also present a Resolution for Priests and Priestly Vocation at the close of the recollection.


Manila Archbishop Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales will be the main celebrant at the closing Mass at 3 p.m. All the priests of the archdiocese have been invited to concelebrate at this Mass.
