Homily delivered by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle during Mass for the celebration of Marian Jubilee on the Year of Mercy at the Minor Basilica of Immaculate Concepcion (manila Cathedral) in Intramuros, Manila on October 7, 2016.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we gave thanks to God for this evening’s gathering. We believe that it is the spirit of the Lord Jesus who brought us together so that we could continue celebrating this great jubilee of mercy and this evening we recognized how God’s mercy comes to us thru the blessed Mother. We call her lovingly the mother of mercy, hail holy queen, mother of mercy and this morning in the same church, the same cathedral we also celebrated the thanksgiving mass for the cannonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

So this morning one woman who known for her mercy and compassion for the poor and this evening the woman who gave us Jesus her son the face of God’s mercy. The gospel for today gives us the grim picture of people’s reaction to Jesus Christ. Not all of them but some of the crowd. There saw how Jesus was driving out demons how Jesus was performing miraculous acts of healing, sigurado pati sila ay nagulat. They are all amazed but after amazement comes the question, how is he able to do this?

Panano kaya? Unfortunately some of them said if he is able to cast out evil spirit, demons, if demons obey him then probably he is using the power of the prince of demons. Who will obey demons? Whom will demons obey? Eh di yung kanilang prinsipe, so they don’t attribute Jesus as miraculous actions specially their exposure of demons to God, to the Holy Spirit. And that change radically their view of the miracles of Jesus.

It was not mercy, God’s mercy that they saw, in the acts of Jesus. They did not see the dawning of the kingdom of God but probably they are genuinely concerned that in Jesus the kingdom of beelzebul, the kingdom of the prince of demons were spread. We do not want to judge the scribes, the pharisees and their whom they influenced in a way we undrstand that, why? Because Jesus came across as someone who violated their norm, their religious practices, their norm, customs and laws.

We know how Jesus apparently violated the law of the sabbath, we know how Jesus violated the means of purity, he allowed people with leprosy to come closer and touch some of them, we know how he violated some of the standards of decency allowing a woman of ill repute, a public sinner to eat with him, to bare his foot with her tears. That’s why we understand why some people were confused, ano nga ba itong si Hesus?

Now my brothers and sisters we can face the crowds because we know were did Jesus came from. We can face the crowds without Jesus and we can say we know he is the son of God, we know he is the son of that woman Mary filled with the Holy spirit, we know the word became human in Jesus not by the power of the prince of demons but by the power of the holy spirit. We know and we know by faith, the faith that St. Paul in the first reading talks about the faith that makes us see the true face of Jesus, but it is not just the presence of the Holy spirit in Mary and in the whole life of Jesus that we believe in, by our faith the holy Spirit and we profess that, he was born of the Virgin Mary and was incarnate by the holy spirit.

We know that, but part of the incarnation by the holy spirit is this. According to St. Paul in the first reading, he became man, he became flesh. Imagined the word of God, the son of God becoming human by the power of the Holy spirit according to St. Paul he risen us from the cursed of the law by becoming a cursed for us. Para tayo mahango sa kasalanan, para ipakita ang habag, the mercy of God he as a human being was subjected to the most merciless judgement. To die on the cross was cursed and experiencing suffering, trials as a human being and by the power of the holy Spirit and by the power of his faith he became the face of Gods mercy to all of us.

Napakagandang pagsasama and that’s how mercy emerges the work of the Holy spirit and living with human beings, uulitin ko yan pati sa ating panahon hindi magiging ganap ang ating habag kung walang kilos ng esperitu santo, our openess to good spirit and pakikiisa sa mga hirap, dusa at mga pinagdaraanan ng kapwa tao.

My dear brothers and sisters when the Holy Spirit acts the holy spirit pushes us towards neighbors to sufffer with them to owe with them. The holy spirit does not as much awake from the human condition no. in Jesus we know that the holy spirit makes the word of God human and the holy spirit annoints Jesus and sends him to the poor to the blind to the lame to the prisoners, to be a human person with them nandiyan ang kilos ng esperitu santo .
