Liturgists Meet in Manila

Liturgists from all over the Philippines will gather in Manila for the 25th National Meeting of Diocesan Directors of Liturgy (NMDDL) on September 13-16, 2010 at the Pius XII Catholic Center in U.N. Avenue, Manila. The theme for this year is “TheVeneration of Saints.”

The silver jubilee meeting will have more than 300 participants from all the archdioceses and dioceses of the Catholic Church in the Philippines. The NMDDL is  an organization established in 1985 by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ Episcopal Commission on Liturgy (ECL) under the chairmanship of Archbishop Jesus Dosado at that time.  It aims to gather once a year all the directors of the diocesan liturgical commissions in the Philippines in order to update them on liturgical questions, create closer ties among them, and promote a greater coordination between the ECL and the diocesan liturgical commissions.

Although the NMDDL was intended primarily for the liturgy directors, it has been a tradition to invite professors who teach liturgy in seminaries and schools of theology.  Later, also the graduates of Paul VI Institute of Liturgy in Malaybalay, Bukidnon have been welcomed to the meeting.  Liturgy directors may bring with them their assistants and office workers.  On the average around 90 people attend the annual meeting.

The yearly meetings are hosted by an Archdiocese and Diocese. This year the Archdiocese of Manila hosts the event. Archbishop Romulo Valles, ECL chairman, will lead in the Vespers opening the meeting. Mass Celebrants for the succeeding days include former ECL Chairman Archbishop Onesimo Gordoncillo, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas, and Manila Archbishop Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales who will preside at the closing Mass. Among the speakers for the meeting are Archbishop Dosado, Fr. Anscar Chupungco, OSB, Fr. Oliver Yalung, Msgr. Florencio Salvador, Msgr. Andres Valera, Fr. Amelito Racelis, Fr. Genaro Diwa, ECL executive secreatry, and Sr. Susan Abellana.

The University of Santo Tomas will host a special session for the NMDDL on the last day. It will have an exhibit on Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint, and its Rector, Fr. Roland V. de la Rosa, O.P. will give a talk on St. Lorenzo Ruiz. The closing Mass on September 16 will be held at the UST chapel.

Following is the program for the 25th NMDDL.
