Breakfast Dialogue with Cardinal Tagle opens 2016 World Interfaith Harmony Week

The 2016 World Harmony week opened on February 1 with a Breakfast Dialogue of religious leaders, government officials, and the members of the Diplomatic Corps hosted by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle at the Arzobispado de Manila in Intramuros.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed on October 20, 2010, a World Interfaith Harmony Week to be observed during the first week of February starting 2011. In establishing this Week, the UN points out that mutual understanding and interreligious dialogue constitute important dimensions of a culture of peace. The World Interfaith Harmony Week is thus a way of promoting harmony among all people regardless of their faith.

To implement the programs and activities for the World Interfaith Harmony Week,
the UniHarmony Partners Manila was established in 2011.  The main goal of the celebration is to strengthen unity and cooperation between and among religions and faith-based organizations and to advocate peace and harmony in society.

In April 2013, Republic Act 10525 was enacted declaring the First Week of February of every year as “World Interfaith Harmony Week” in the entire country.  Section 1 states that “All government agencies and instrumentalities, including government-owned and -controlled corporations as well as local government units, are hereby mandated to carry out the observance of activities designed to advance the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill in accordance with religious traditions and practices.”?”?
