Alay Kapwa 2016

Pastoral Letter

In a few weeks, the Lenten season will start.  Lent is “a very acceptable time”(cf.2 Cor 6, 2) to open ourselves to the Lord Jesus and to be renewed through a process of conversion.  The path to conversion directs us to turn to the Lord, who should be our priority, and to practice charity towards our neighbor.

For several years now, during lent, we have been conducting our Alay Kapwa Lenten evangelization and fundraising program.  The program is meant to support our social services to the poor, especially those who suffer during natural and human-caused calamities.  Funds raised during the second collection for the six (6) Sundays of lent (from February 14 to march 20) will be remitted to Caritas Manila for our Damayan relief assistance, emergency response and humanitarian aid.

Once again, we appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, to support Alay Kapwa.  In this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, let us heed the call of Pope Francis to practice mercy through concrete acts of charity. “Let us not fail into humiliating indifference…Let us open our eyes and see misery..the wounds of our brothers and sisters…and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help! (Misericordiae Vultus 15)”.

With the increasing number and magnitude of disasters and calamities being responded to by Caritas Damayan, our Alay Kapwa funds get immediately depleted.  It is therefore our hope that we will be more generous in our almsgiving this season of Lent.

May God bless you and reward you for your kindness and generosity.
