RCAM MEDR holds disaster preparedness seminar

The Archdiocese of Manila's Ministry on Environment and Disaster Response recently conducted a two-day Parish Based Disaster Preparedness and Response seminar  at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center in UN Avenue, Paco, Manila.

 

Held last May 20 & 27 with the theme, “Towards the Establishment of Parish-Based Disaster Preparedness and Response Ministries,” the seminar was attended by representatives from the ninety two (92) archdiocesan parishes and suffragan dioceses.

 

With its objective to assist the metropolitan dioceses in setting up preparedness and response ministries in parishes, the seminar aims to brief the participants with the basic understanding of disaster in the church as well as to impart significant knowledge and a deeper capacity that will empower the pastoral workers toward their objectives.

 

The first day of the seminar began with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist presided by Rev. Fr. Anton C.T. Pascual, Director of Caritas Manila followed by his opening remarks on May 20 at 9 a.m.

 

During the two-day seminar, Msgr. Jose Clemente F. Ignacio, Vicar General and Moderator Curiae of the Archdiocese of Manila expounded on the topics, Situation and Theological Foundation/Pastoral Reason of Our Involvement, Climate Change Adaptation as Part of Mitigation, and Introduction to Parish Based Disaster Response.

 

Mr. Glenn R. Lawas from Quiapo Church Diasater Preparedness and Response Ministry gave a lecture on Introduction-Basic Concepts/Terminologies and Hazard and Risk Mapping while Ms. Minerva Seculles, also from Quiapo Church Diasater Preparedness and Response Ministry talked about Disaster Preparedness (Preparatory Phase) and Climate Change Adaptation as Part of Mitigation.

 

Ms. Gilda C. Avedillo of Caritas Damayan and Ministry on Environment and Disaster Response discussed the following topics: Disaster Management Cycle, Disaster Preparedness (Preparatory Phase), Tools in Risk Assessment, Relief and Rescue Response, Recovery and Rehabilitation and Disaster Communication.

 

The topic Organizing the Archdiocese/Metropolitan Disaster Response was given by Rev. Fr. Ricardo Valencia of Caritas Damayan and Head of the Ministry on Environment and Disaster Response of the Archdiocese of Manila.

 

The modules presented during the different talks were accompanied by a variety of activities and video presentations.

 

The two-day seminar was concluded with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.  It was followed by the distribution of certificates, first-aid kits and Damayan vests to the participants.

 

The organizers of the seminar were the Archdiocese of Manila Office of Moderator Curiae, Caritas Manila Damayan, Radio Veritas, Lord of the Black Nazarene Foundation, Inc., and Quiapo Church Disaster Preparedness and Response Ministry.
