Frontliners keep our nation afloat amidst many shortcomings in COVID Response--Bp. Pabillo

As the country celebrates the National Heroes Day, the Archdiocese of Manila paid tribute to all the frontliners in a Mass held at the San Felipe Neri Parish on August 31, 2020, at 12 noon and was presided by Most Rev. Broderick Pabillo, Apostolic Administrator of Manila.

The Mass was attended by representatives from different sectors who serve as fronliners in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic--government leader, medical practitioner, media personality, law and order personnel and service provider personnel.

Among the frontliner representatives were Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita Abalos and GMA news correspondent Mariz Umali.

The other frontliner representatives were PSSg. Hesus Sumang (DCADD), Sgt. Ruel Nicolas (Phil. Navy), SF01 Julius Freolo and SF03 Celso Matanguihan (Bureau of Fire), George Wayne E. Molina, Noel Fraxides, Raymart Juria (Grab Food/Grab Express) and Marilou Olanga (Caritas Manila Volunteer)

In his homily, Bishop Pabillo said the celebration is intended to honor and pray for all the frontliners who tirelessly and selflessly fight the pandemic that is brought about by the outbreak of coronavirus in the country and around the world.

"Kilalanin natin sila at kailangan natin sila. Humingi tayo ng tulong sa Diyos na gabayan sila, palakasin ang kanilang loob at ipagdasal natin na makayanan nila at hindi sila magkasakit, hindi sila sumuko” he said.

Bp. Pabillo put into light that because of the frontliners' sacrifices they are able to keep the nation afloat especially amidst the many corruptions and inadequacies in responding to the pandemic.

"Dahil sa kabayanihang ito, lumulutang ang bayan. Nakakagalit na may mga tao na nagpapalubog sa bansa. Lubog sa utang, lubog sa korapsiyon, lubog sa kahirapan at ngayon dahil sa walang plano at kulang ng prayoridad, lubog sa infections ang ating bayan. Pero kahit na may humihila pababa, lumulutang ang bayan dahil po yan sa mga modern day heroes natin ngayon."

He commended all the frontliners in the field of medicine, transportation, school administrators, teachers and parents who exert effort to keep a positive outlook and perspective about the pandemic that we are battling.

He as well thanked all the frontliners in the church who make the Word of God heard especially during this time when people are losing hope and are discouraged.

“Nandiyan din yung mga tao sa ating mga religious sectors, sa simbahan, mga pari, mga volunteers, mga parish workers, mga pastor na palagi ring nakikiisa at nagbibigay ng lakas ng loob sa mga tao. Nagpapaalaala, hindi tayo iniiwanan ng Diyos,” he said.
