The venerated image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Mount Carmel in Quezon City was canonically crowned last August 15, 2020, Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The coronation was led by Most Reverend Honesto Ongtioco, D.D., Bishop of Cubao, with the authority given by Pope Francis through the Congregation of the Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments and Coronacion Canonica.

In his homily, Bishop Ongtioco emphasized that the coronation is a call to renew our faith as Mary is crowned to be the Queen of Heaven and Earth.

“Indeed, she was destined to become the Mother of the Redeemer. She was chosen to be the closest associate of Jesus in his work of redemption…The Lord wants Mary to reign with Him in heaven forever. The woman who called herself handmade of the Lord is now exalted far above the cherubim and she is enthroned as Queen of Heaven and Earth.” said the Bishop.

The Bishop also explained that despite the coronation of Mary as queen, she continues to sympathize with the faithful especially during this time of the pandemic.

“Although she is enthroned as queen she remains to be our mother… Therefore, to her, we entrust our difficult time. We know that from her heavenly thrown she continues to turn her eyes of mercy towards us and she shows to us the blessed fruit of her womb, Jesus our King.” the Bishop added.

Rev. Fr. Joey Mabborang, Outgoing Parish Priest and Rector of the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped make the celebration successful in spite of the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine.

“It is with the humble heart that I express my deepest gratitude for sharing your time, talent, resources and generosity for the benefit and ultimate success of all the projects and endeavors and visions and brought to fruition in our Parish, Shrine and Basilica,” said Fr. Joey Mabborang

In 1954, the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built when the Order of Discalced Carmelites came in the archdiocese of Manila. It became a parish in 1975 with its first parish priest, Rev. Fr. Paul O’ Sullivan. In December 2015, the parish was declared as a National Shrine. Then, in November 2018, it was elevated to the status of Minor Basilica. (Fatima Llanza/RCAM-AOC)
