Bishop Sobreviñas dies at 96


Retired Bishop Manuel Sobreviñas of the Diocese of Imus passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2020. He was 96.

According to CBCPNews, the bishop died at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City at 12:45 p.m.

Bishop Sobreviñas was born in Dinalupihan town in Bataan province and was ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Manila in 1951.

He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Manila in 1979 and chaired the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education from 1991 to 1993.

In 1993, he was appointed as the third bishop of Imus and retired in October 2001 at the age of 77.

With the prelate’s death, retired Bishop Jose Sorra of Legazpi, age 91, is now the oldest living Filipino bishop, according to the website Catholic Hierarchy. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC)
