RCAM Chrism Mass 2020 set on June 19

Fr. Reginald Malicdem, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Manila, announced that the celebration of Chrism Mass for the archdiocese is scheduled on June 19, 2020, Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, at 9 in the morning. The Chancery Office of the Archdiocese made this announcement in a circular released last June 4, 2020.

Chrism Mass is usually held on Holy Thursday of the Holy week held at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros. But because of the coronavirus outbreak, the celebration was postponed after the government's declaration of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in Luzon which prohibited public gatherings including liturgical services.

According to Father Malicdem, the said celebration will have certain limitations in accordance with the protocol set by the government.

“We will announce later who can attend the Chrism Mass. This will depend on the quarantine classification by then,” he said.

The renewal of priestly promises, which usually happens during Chrism mass,  is scheduled on August 4, 2020, Feast of St. John Mary Vianney with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Manila Cathedral, at 9 a.m., to celebrate Clergy Day.

Chrism Mass is one of the principal expressions of the fullness of the Bishop’s priesthood. During this Mass, all the priests gather at their respective diocesan cathedrals as a sign of unity with the bishop as well as the brotherhood among the priests. It is also during this mass that the chrism oil and the oil of the sick are blessed. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC)
