Cardinal Tagle to wash feet of ex-drug addicts and drug surrenderers on Holy Thursday

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle will wash the feet of former drug addicts and drug surrenderers on April 13, Holy Thursday.

Cardinal Tagle will also wash the feet of policemen, government officials, volunteers and relatives of victims of extrajudicial killings.

The Washing of the Feet is part of the Liturgy of the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper to be held at the Manila Cathedral at 5 pm.

This year Cardinal Tagle will wash the feet of twelve people representing the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ. They are the following:

  • Dr. Ervin de la Rosa and Charman Maria Victoria Grande from the government

  • PO1 Florence Gumilab and PO2 Johnny Acebes

  • Joana Vicencio and Joseph Guinto, relatives of victims of extra-judicial killings

  • Bong Lazo and Ferdie Santos, former drug addicts

  • Alison Salonga and George Mamañgon, drug surrenderers

  • Jacqueline Portugal and Dominic Portugal, Volunteers

It was at the Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his apostles, telling them ‘Now that I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14).

The Washing of the Feet reminds the faithful that as disciples of Christ we are called to serve others in a spirit of humility.

Cardinal Tagle will also preside at the following Mass at the Manila Cathedral during the Holy Week: Palm Sunday, April 9, 7 am; Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday, 6 am and Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, 5 pm; Good Friday, April 14, 3 pm; Easter Vigil on Black Saturday, April 15, 8 pm; and Easter Sunday, April 16, 7 am.
