Church and Local Government entreat Mary's Intercession Amidst Pandemic

Bishops from different parts of the Philippines have led the faithful in prayer to consecrate the nation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13, 2020. This was to ask for intercession for the end of the coronavirus pandemic that has ravaged not just the Philippines but the whole world.

The common prayer was called the “National Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary: We pray as one. We heal as one. We renew the world as one”. It was joined by Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles together with 6 other bishops who led in praying the rosary at 8:30 in the morning.

The bishops who also took part in the simultaneous consecration were Bishop Dennis Villarojo (Diocese of Malolos), Bishop Broderick Pabillo (Archdiocese of Manila), Bishop Bartolome Santos, Jr. (Diocese of Iba), Archbishop Jose Palma (Diocese of Cebu), Archbishop John Du (Archdiocese of Palo) and Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo (Diocese of Kidapawan).

After the praying of the Rosary and the prayer for consecration, a mass was held at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Valenzuela City, which was presided by Bishop Villarojo.

At 12 noon, at the Manila Cathedral, Bishop Pabillo, Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila led another celebration of Mass on the occasion of the 103rd anniversary of the apparition of the Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal. The celebration also became the occasion for the consecration of the whole Archdiocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, together with the 5 cities that consist it.

The Mayors of the five cities were also present and led the prayer of consecration with Bishop Pabillo. Present were Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Domagaso, Mayor Carmelita Abalos of the City of Mandaluyong, Mayor Abigail Binay of the City of Makati, Mayor Imelda Calixto Rubiano of the City of Pasay and Mayor Francisco Zamora of the City of San Juan.

“We thank the Lord for the gift of the Immaculate Heart of Mary that he gives to us. Sama sama tayo bilang isang simbahan dito sa Archdicoese of Manila na ipaubaya at italaga ang ating sarili sa ating Mahal na Inang si Maria. We consecrate ourselves to her immaculate heart,” Bishop Pabillo said.

“Tanggapin din natin ang hamon na dahil sa ating pagtatalga, tayo ay magdadasal, pagpepenitensiya at magbabagong buhay. Isang buhay na lumalayo kay satanas at sa lahat ng kasamaan.isang buhay na lumalapit kay Hesus na ating tagapagligtas,” he added.

At the end of the celebrations, the five mayors together with Bishop Pabillo offered flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary as a sign of trust and devotion.

In his homily, the Bishop expressed his gratitude to the mayors for responding to the invitation to come and join the faithful during the significant Church feast.

“Thank you, my dear Mayors for coming and leading your constituents to this consecration that even if you are busy you have taken time to be here with all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Manila for this important event of our life of faith in this Archdiocese,” he said.

The events were live-streamed via the Facebook page of different platforms of the Archdiocese of Manila – TV Maria, Radio Veritas and Archdiocese of Manila - Office of Communications in partnership with the Dioceses of Cubao and Malolos. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC)
