Communities warned against fraudulent activities during COVID-19 pandemic

Rev. Fr. Roy Bellen, Vice President for Operations of Radio Veritas 846 gave an advisory to communities on fraudulent activities specifically on donations bearing the name of Church institutions especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Radio Veritas, a Church-owned radio station, and Caritas Manila, the social service arm of the Archdiocese of Manila, are among those institutions which fraud perpetrators have used to lure donors to give money.

According to Veritas news, Fr. Bellen informed the faithful to be vigilant by doing fact-checking of credible sources in social media and other media platforms. He also urged them to contact the respective organizations in order to confirm if the information they have received are legitimate or not.

“Nais kong ipaalala sa ating mga Kapanalig na mag-ingat po tayo; mas maganda ma-confirm kung saan po galing ang balita, yung panawagan o request; kung ito ba talaga ay galing sa simbahan,” he said.

He told the faithful that they can follow updates and know factual information through the official social media accounts of Radio Veritas (, Caritas Manila and other Church offices.

“Mas maganda na we are always aware sa mga main platforms, mga official accounts ng Veritas, Caritas at mga Diocese; nang sa gayon we are aware na official ang mga panawagan,” he added.

Even public figures of the Catholic Church in the Philippines are not spared from these fraudulent activities. High ranking church officials like Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Cardinal Orlando Quevedo and Archbishop Jose Palma, to name a few, were among those used to make fake social media accounts to solicit money.

Names of priests from various parishes were also being used with the same motive.

Fr. Bellen advised the faithful that it will be wise to call and confirm institutions if donations are to be made, to avoid falling victim to frauds. Here are the official contact information of Caritas Manila, Radio Vertas and The Archdiocese of Manila:
