Cardinal Tagle: Jesus is the Word of God

His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle presided over the Holy Eucharist in celebration of the National Bible Sunday at the Manila Cathedral, on January 26, 2020, at 10 a.m.

Cardinal Tagle, who is set to leave this February for Rome to fulfill his appointment as the Prefect for the Propagation of Faith has reminded the faithful about the importance of the Word of God and their role as bearers of the Good News.

"So these are three reminders: We follow Jesus who preach the word of God, who was the fulfilment of the word of God and we ask Jesus to open our eyes about the word of God because He is the word of God. Secondly we are all called to work with Jesus after listening to Him, we go and proclaim the word of God and thirdly, it is not just listening and speaking about the word of God, living, fulfilling the word of God in our lives," Cardinal Tagle said.

At the Vatican, Pope Francis also celebrated Mass for the Sunday of the Word of God, urging the faithful to make room in their lives for the Word of God.

“Each day, let us read a verse or two of the Bible.  Let us begin with the Gospel, let us keep it open on our table, carry it in our pocket, read it on our cell phones, and allow it to inspire us daily.  We will discover that God is close to us, that he dispels our darkness and, with great love, leads our lives into deep waters,” Pope Francis said during his homily.

According to Vatican News, those who were present for the mass were given a free copy of the Bible as a symbolic gesture of encouragement to make room each day in their lives for the Word of God.

Pope Francis, in his Apostolic Letter Motu Proprio “Aperuit illis”, has instituted the yearly observance of the Sunday of the Word of God every Third Sunday in Ordinary Time for the entire Catholic Church. This annual event is dedicated for the celebration, study, and spread of the Word of God. (Jheng M. Prado/RCAM-AOC)
