Pope Francis appoints Cardinal Tagle as the new Prefect of Propaganda Fide

His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle as the new Prefect of Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (Propaganda Fide).

The appointment was announced in Rome on Sunday, December 8, 2019. Cardinal Tagle will replace Cardinal Fernando Filoni who has been in the post since 2011.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Filoni will assume the post of Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in place of Cardinal Edwin Frederick O' Brien, who resigned in April 2019.

Cardinal Tagle is the second Asian to hold that post and the second major nomination to the Roman Curia made by Pope Francis in the last quarter of the year.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle, 62, was born on June 21, 1957, in Manila. He was ordained priest in 1962. He obtained his doctorate in Theology in the United States. In 1997, he joined the International Theological Commission after he spent seven years in Rome. He served as parish priest of the Cathedral of Imus and was nominated Bishop of that diocese by Pope John Paul Ii in October 2001. On October 13, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Metropolitan Archbishop of Manila. In November 2012, he was appointed Cardinal.

Cardinal Tagle is also the president of Caritas Internationalis and Catholic Biblical Federation.
