Archdiocese of Manila to mark 3rd World Day of the Poor

“The hope of the poor will not perish for ever” (Ps 9:19).

In his message for the Third World Day of the Poor released on June 13, 2019, he reminded the faithful to be in solidarity with the poor and encouraged them to become instruments of peace and hope to every human being especially the poor.

Responding to the call of the Holy Father in the Year of the Youth, the Archdiocese of Manila will mark the Third World Day of the Poor on November 16, 2019, at the San Andres Complex, San Andres Street Malate, Manila, at 7 a.m. to 12 noon.

The World Day of the Poor was established by the Holy Father Pope Francis in his Apostolic Letter, Misericordia et Misera that was issued on November 20, 2016, to celebrate the Extraordinary Year of Mercy. It is celebrated every 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, this year falls on November 17.

“I ask all Christian communities, and all those who feel impelled to offer hope and consolation to the poor, to help ensure that this World Day of the Poor will encourage more and more people to cooperate effectively so that no one will feel deprived of closeness and solidarity,” Pope Francis said.

The half-day event will hold an activity entitled “A Dialogue of the Cardinal and the Marginalized” where Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle will interview people from the poor sectors of the society. It aims to convey the message of Pope Francis to the poor and highlights Jesus’ preferential for the poor. It will culminate with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist where Cardinal Tagle will preside.

Manila Mayor Isko Domagoso Moreno, the former actor will attend the event and will deliver the opening remarks.

In a circular letter released to priests, religious men and women, and laypeople in October, Cardinal Tagle invited the faithful to attend the gathering and be one with the poor.

“I am inviting you and members of your community to participate in this gathering and let God’s love, grace, and hope strengthen the spirit of the poor in the face of all hardships that they are suffering,” Cardinal Tagle said. (Jheng Prado/RCAM-AOC)
