This was what Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle told the participants of the Archdiocese of Manila Stewardship Summit held at the Paco Catholic School, on Saturday, August 31, 2019, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“A steward is a disciple. He or she tries to discern, what is the mind of the true owner and I will take care of what the owner has entrusted to me according to the owner’s desire,” Cardinal Tagle said.

In his homily, Cardinal Tagle reflected on the Reading from the Book of Sirach where it speaks about humility.

“Kung mahal mo yung nagbibigay sayo, mas mahal mo yung hindi mayabang. While you appreciate people who give you gifts, you appreciate more those who are humble,” Cardinal Tagle said.

Reflecting on the said Reading, Cardinal Tagle expounded on the humility of becoming stewards of God’s creation. As stewards, we are also called custodians who humbly acknowledge that God is the owner of everything around us and we are caretakers of His creation.

“Ang pag-aalaga sa mundo, pag-aalaga sa kapwa and all of that rooted in our identity - I am not an owner, I am a steward. And so, a steward follows an owner. I am a disciple. And I execute what my master wants me to do,” Cardinal Tagle said.

The Stewardship Summit is a response to the call of the bishops from the Ecclesiastical Province of Manila through a Pastoral letter issued in 2017 entitled “As each has received a gift, employ it for one another (1 Petet 4:10). The bishops invited the faithful to be responsible stewards of God’s various gifts for the building up of the Church. It envisioned “vibrant parishes supported by generous stewards who all feel they belong, and who participate in the Church’s work of bringing people to communion with one another and with God.”

Cardinal Tagle also delivered the Keynote Address in the morning followed by the talk of Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo on the Spirituality of Stewardship.

Some of the best practices on stewardship in parishes were discussed by the following priests: Rev. Fr. Joselito Jopson, Diocese of Pasig; Rev. Fr. Gilbert Kabigting, former Parochial Vicar of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe – Makati; and Rev. Fr. Benny Tuazon, St. Anthony Parish – Singalong.

In the afternoon, a workshop was held where participants were grouped according to vicariates followed by the talk of Mr. Joey Clemente on the Socio Pastoral Institute.

The celebration of the Holy Eucharist concluded the event and was presided over by Cardinal Tagle and Bishop Pabillo along with the other priests and was attended by more than 700 lay people and priests from the different parishes in the archdiocese.

In connection to the Stewardship Summit, the Walk for Creation the following day, September 1, which was culminated by a mass presided by the Cardinal at the Quezon City memorial Circle. The celebration of the Season of Creation will be celebrated annually from September to October. (Jheng M. Prado/RCAM-AOC)
