According to the Department of Health (DOH), dengue fever is the fastest spreading vector-borne disease in the world. It is endemic in 100 countries and is transmitted by day-biting Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. From 2012 to 2016, the number of average cases of dengue reaches up to 185,008. The number of deaths are at 732, with an average Case Fatality Rate of 39%.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by the leptospira bacteria, present in floodwater contaminated with urine of infected animals. Through the bacteria's entry in open wounds, humans acquire this fatal illness characterized mainly by inflammation and internal bleeding. From January to April this year, DOH recorded 406 cases of leptospirosis, 47 of which resulted to deaths. Given the rainy season and the rise of occurrence of floods, it is expected that the number of cases will increase in the coming months. (Jheng M. Prado/RCAM-AOC)
