Solemn Thanksgiving Mass

Rev. Msgr. Geronimo F. Reyes, parish priest, celebrated a solemn thanksgiving Mass, Monday, August 26, with concelebrants, resident guest priests Rev. Fr. John Lourdusamy, Rev. Fr. Gerald dela Cruz, Rev. Fr. Lad Bryan Lawrence Ligutom, and, Rev. Fr. SeverinoEnopeña.

In his homily, Fr. Enopeña emphasized the reason that we keep count of the parish anniversary is, unlike the ancient empires of old, the parish is alive.

“Buhay na buhay ang Inmaculada Concepcion dito sa Tayuman,” he said, applauding the council officers, pastoral workers, and the parishioners for keeping alive the virtues of the Blessed Mother in Tayuman.

He said that a parish cannot live through the effort of only a few people, but takes the will of society.

“Hindi nabubuhay ang isang parokya dahil sa iilang ta olamang; ito’y buhay ng buong lipunan.”

Noodle Festival

It has been a tradition in the parish to hold simple agape during important occasions, and this year, to celebrate 68 years as the seat of Marian devotion in Tondo, a Noodle Festival was held after the Mass featuring a potluck contribution of different noodle dishes from the various organizations and sub ministries.

Parishioners, pastoral workers, and clergy alike shared in heaps of pancit bihon, pancit palabok, spaghetti, baked macaroni, lomi, and others.

Parish Ministry Fair 2019

To begin the celebration of the parish’s foundation anniversary and to boost parish awareness on different avenues of service, a Ministry Fair was held in the church grounds on August 25, featuring various parish ministries and organizations.

Each organization and sub ministry set up informative booths that highlighted the activities and goals of each organization. Parishioners were invited to join and discover how they can further serve Christ and His Church. Organizations also set up bazaars and sold a host of different items, from snacks to collectible toys. Free lugaw was also distributed to all churchgoers courtesy of Duterte’s Kitchen.

Tracing Its Roots from Mary

The Immaculate Conception Parish was established on August 26, 1951, according to the Decree signed by Bishop Gabriel Reyes. Rev. Fr. Arsenio Pineda was appointed by Archbishop Michael O’Doherty as the first parish priest.

Blessed by the late Rufino Cardinal Santos on December 8, 1954, the newly erected church was designed as a temporary Cathedral (pro-Cathedral) while the church in Intramuros was still undergoing construction following the devastation of the Second World War. Upon its reconstruction, the Immaculate Conception Church in Intramuros was designated again as a cathedral. Up to this writing, Tondo residents still refer to ICP Tayuman as the “Cathedral.”

Under the guidance of its parish priest, Rev. Msgr. Geronimo F. Reyes, Immaculate Conception Parish continues to guide and serve the community of Tayuman. (Jose Lorenzo V. de Jesus / SOCOM - Immaculate Conception Parish)
