A magnitude of 5.4 and 6.4 struck the island of Itbayat, one of the three main islands of Batanes leaving eight people dead and hundreds injured.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the quake was felt at 4:16 in the morning on Saturday, after which several aftershocks were recorded since then.

According to Bishop Ulep, they are closely monitoring the Island of Itbayat where most people were injured and properties were damaged.

“We are trying to find a way including my priest how to get there (Itbayat) to monitor, hopefully, the government and the military will be able to send some rescue mission in Itbayat kasi ang problema ang pagpunta doon right now,” Bishop Ulep told Radio Veritas.

The earthquake in Batanes coincided with the Metro-wide Shake Drill (Duck, Cover, Hold) on July 27, that started at 4 a.m. The activity is part of the preparation for “The Big One.”

As the prelature of Batanes continues to face the crisis brought about by the tremor, Bishop Ulep seeks prayer and support for the people in Batanes who were greatly affected by the quake.

“I’m continuing to appeal to our people, our brothers and sisters to continue to show our support and solidarity in whatever way they could,” Bishop Ulep told Radio Veritas. (Jheng M. Prado/RCAM-AOC)
