Journeying with the Youth

“We are called to journey with them [the youth].”

Ms. Christina Lamas, Executive Director of the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) in the United States of America (USA), gave emphasis on the topic “New Trends in Youth Ministry” in one of the concurrent sessions during the Philippine Conference on New Evangelization (PCNE 6) held at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion, on July 20, 2019.

“We don’t need them just to fill out our pews, the young need mentors to accompany them along the way,” Lamas said.

Ms. Lamas stressed that the youth of today want to belong and be connected; that others would value their skills, knowledge and wisdom; and that they wanted a simple foundation of honesty, loyalty, sincerity and authenticity.

“Our goal is for the youth to encounter Christ...the young people wants to know from us how Christ is being lived and manifested in our lives,” Lamas said.

Lamas also stated that during the Synod on Youth, it was discussed that a ministry works using the disciples in Emmaus as a model.

She as well told the participants that the young people want the elders to journey with them, to be approachable and not untouchable saying that the young people have something to offer and that it’s worth listening to. (Rocelyn V. Garcia /SOCOM-St. Joseph Parish, Gagalangin)
