Cardinal Tagle Exhorts the Clergy for his Birthday: Love and Pray for persecutors

The clergy of the Archdiocese of Manila celebrated early the birthday of Cardinal Tagle, archbishop of Manila, as they gather for their monthly recollection and meeting at the San Carlos Seminary compound on June 18. The celebration began with a mass presided by Cardinal Tagle himself and concelebrated by Bp. Broderick Pabillo and Bp-elect Robbie Gaa, the Rector of Holy Apostles Senior Seminary who was appointed as the new bishop of the Diocese of Novaliches.

In his homily, the Cardinal reflected on the challenge of the Scriptures to be perfect just as the Father is perfect. The Cardinal encouraged the clergy to continually work and be of service to the poor as a way towards perfection. He admitted that the poor remains underserved in the archdiocese because of their sheer number despite the many programs that are continually being organized for them. Apart from the poor, the youth and the males are the other sectors that remain underserved, according to a recent survey within the archdiocese quoted by the Cardinal.

The Cardinal also exhorted the clergy to continue to pray for those who persecute the Church. He narrated that during the visit of the bishops of the Philippines to the Vatican (Ad Limina), the Pope said to the bishops that he is aware of the situation in the Philippines, especially about some of the violations against human dignity and life. In spite of these, the Church is being called to be pastors even of these violators, the Pope said. The Cardinal pointed out that the Church has a ministry to fulfill even to politicians who are in conflict with the Church. “Politicians who give us trouble might be wounded people and their behavior might be a cry for help… Can we empty ourselves and be the Pastor’s love towards the enemy?” Cardinal Tagle said.

After the Mass, a brief conference about the Church’s mandate to be missionaries was given by Msgr. Bong Lo, head of the Pontifical Mission Society in the Philippines.

On June 21, Cardinal Tagle will celebrate his 62nd birthday. A Mass will be celebrated and the annual blood letting activity in the Archdiocese will be held in the Arzobispado de Manila, Intramuros, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Fr. Roy M. Bellen/RCAM-AOC)
