Speaking during the Diocesan Pentecost Recollection at the Shrine of Saint Paul in Quezon City June 8, the bishop announced that Pope Francis appointed him to the post a day after his retirement.

The prelate will serve the post until Bishop-elect Roberto Gaa formally takes over as the new bishop of Novaliches.

While the dates of Gaa’s episcopal ordination and installation are yet to be announced, Tobias hinted he will serve as administrator for three months only.

“When Bishop Robbie arrives, Bishop Toby leaves. The end, that’s it,” Tobias said.

In the meantime, it is business as usual for the 77-year old bishop, who has been serving the diocese since 2003.

According to him, he would be able to deliver whatever his prior commitments demanded of him.

“It’s good this happened… I can continue what I need to do under the capacity given me by Rome as apostolic administrator,” he added.

The pope on June 6 accepted the resignation of Tobias from the pastoral care of Novaliches, and at the same time appointed Fr. Gaa as his successor.

Tobias explained while Fr. Gaa is still awaiting for his episcopal ordination and installation, he already has that “full power” over the diocese.

“Every move I make, I would have to inform the new bishop,” he added, “such as creating a new parish or ordaining priests.”

Upon his appointment, Fr. Gaa of the Archdiocese of Manila has been serving as rector of the Holy Apostle Seminary in Makati City. (Minnie Agdeppa-CBCPNews/RCAM-AOC)
