Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick S. Pabillo, D.D. presided the Holy Eucharist in celebration of Labor Day on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church) at 8 am.

In his homily, Pabillo, who is also the chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on the Laity (CBCP-ECL) emphasized that work should not be viewed as an "economic activity". Instead, Pabillo stressed that workers should be given importance because they play a significant role in the economic progress of a company and the country.

He also stated that a worker should have regular employment, just wage, and security of tenure in order to meet the basic needs of his family.

Aside from the rights of the workers Pabillo mentioned, he also urged them to value their jobs by striving hard not only for themselves but for the society as well.

As workers who also belong in a community, Pabillo encouraged them to look after the welfare of their fellow workers who are experiencing abuse in their jobs and are receiving unjust compensation.

"Ang paggawa ‘it creates human communities’ nagkakaisa sila.

In celebration of Labor Day, President Rodrigo Duterte signed an executive order prohibiting illegal contracting during a meeting held in Cebu City.

The President admitted that the EO is not enough because he said the congress needs to review the outdated labor code in the Philippines.

Pabillo was joined by Rev. Fr. Matvin Cruz, Parochial Vicar of Quiapo Church and Rev. Fr. Enrico Adoviso of the Archdiocese of Manila Ministry on Labor Concerns.
