Be humble like a child, says Cardinal Tagle

“Ang pagiging bata sa paghahari ng Diyos ay yung pag aming kailangan ko ng Diyos.”

This was the message conveyed by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle during his homily for the Misa ng Sambayang Pilipino that opened the Fourth Philippine Conference on New Evangelization on Friday, July 28, 2017.

Speaking in front of more than six thousand delegates, Cardinal Tagle reflected on the wisdom of how to become great like a child in the kingdom of heaven.

“In the kingdom of heaven, the greatest is the one who becomes like a child and unless we become lowly, humbled like a child, we will not even belong to the kingdom of heaven. Let us not even think of being great, even belonging to the kingdom of heaven requires already being a child,” he said.

Cardinal Tagle also stated in his homily that our communion with the Lord is affected by the way we understand greatness according to the kingdom of this world.

“The greatness, the forms of greatness according to the kingdoms of this world, disrupts communion. If you look at the division, hatred and wars in the world, one of the causes is the notion, the understanding of greatness according to the kingdoms of this world.”

Reflecting on the theme of this year’s conference, “Of One Heart and Soul”, he said that communion is built when one learns the virtue of humility by accepting that he is a creature subject to weaknesses and dependent on others and on God.

“I do not pretend that I am greater than who I am. I acknowledge my weakness, my fragility, my limitations, my being a creature.  And because I am a creature I know from the very beginning I depended on my creator, I depended on God and I will continue to depend on God, and I will continue to depend on other people beginning with my parents my family and then the wider society.”

He further added that being a child in God’s kingdom, one must admit that he needs the presence of the Lord to be in communion with him and the whole of His creation.

“The child like character of someone who knows oneself without any illusions of grandeur, without any lies of being superior but in my fragility and frailty I constantly say a prayer, I need you God and without you I will not be who I am and what I want to be.”

Before Cardinal Tagle ended his homily, he asked the faithful to seek the guidance of the Santo Nino who remained a child depended on the love of God.

“We turn to the Santo Nino. Jesus remained the child, always depended on God and in his being a child he is in communion with all the weak and sinful people inviting us, open your hearts, be in communion with us, let us be of one heart, of one soul.”

The Misa ng Sambayanang Pilipino held at the Quadricentennial Pavilion of the University of Santo Tomas during the first day of the conference was in honor of Santo Niño who is the symbol of faith in the historic place of Cebu. It is also in preparation for the celebration of 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines.

PCNE4 was held from July 28-30, 2017.
