Fr. Romeo “Archie” Intengan, 74

The Office of the Provincial of the Philippine Province Society of Jesus has announced the passing away of Fr. Romeo Intengan, SJ, former head of the Philippine Jesuits.

Fr. Intengan died on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. He suffered cardiac arrest while being brought to the hospital. He was 74 years old.

Fr. Intengan entered the Jesuit Society on July 25, 1970 and was ordained priest on March 27, 1977.

He studied Medicine at the University of the Philippines in Manila. He also studied Theology at the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, Spain.

He took courses specializing on Christian Social Ethics and Medical and Sexual Ethics.

He was also a member of Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS), and Department of Science and Technology (DoST).

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle gives his message for the passing of Fr. Intengan.

“The Archdiocese of Manila thanks God and the Society of Jesus for the gift of Fr. Archie Intengan, SJ to the Church and to the nation. Generations of bishops, priests, religious, pastoral workers, and peace-loving Filipinos have been inspired by his wisdom and passionate love of Jesus, the Church and of the country. We will miss him. But I believe that in his death, he continues to serve,” Cardinal Tagle said. The remains of Fr. Intengan lie in state at the Oratory of St. Ignatius, Loyola House of Studies in Ateneo de Manila University campus, Loyola Heights, Q.C.

There will be daily wake Masses at 8 p.m.

The Funeral Mass is tentatively scheduled on Saturday, October 14 at 8 a.m. in the Oratory of St. Ignatius, LHS.

He will be buried at the Sacred Heart Novitiate, Jesuit Cemetery after the Funeral Mass.
